Track Alignment and Roller Wear

Rollers and tracks fail together, because each one damages the other, and telling them apart decides what actually needs replacing.

A worn roller produces noise throughout the travel, loudest where the door moves fastest. A track fault produces a catch at the same height on every cycle. Noise everywhere points at rollers; a repeatable snag points at the track.

Rollers are consumables. Each has a stem seated in a hinge and a wheel turning on a bearing, and the bearing is what fails. Near the coast that happens sooner, because salt attacks the bearing race from inside where nothing is visible.

A seized roller stops rolling and starts skidding. That scores the inside of the track, which then chews through the next set of rollers faster, and it puts sideways load on the hinge, which slowly bends and pulls the section out of line. The roller is cheap. What it damages is not.

Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are the sensible default for almost every home: quieter against steel track, and the seal keeps corrosive air away from the moving parts.

Tracks are checked by sighting down them from the floor. The gap to the door edge should be even for the full length. Bowing, a visible kink, or a gap that opens and closes as your eye travels down it all mean the track needs attention before new rollers go in.
