How a Garage Door Service Visit Works

A good service visit follows the same order every time, because the door has to be understood before anything is priced.

The first step is a conversation. What the door was doing when it stopped, whether it made a noise, whether the fault is constant or intermittent. That detail decides what gets checked first and, often, what needs to be on the van.
Next comes the balance test with the opener disconnected. A correctly balanced door stays put roughly halfway up. If it slams down or shoots up, the springs are out of balance and that finding governs everything else, because an opener cannot be judged on a door it was never balanced to lift.
Then the mechanical inspection: springs for gaps and rust, cables for broken strands, rollers for free rotation and flat spots, tracks for alignment, hinges for bending, the bottom section for corrosion.
Only then does the opener get looked at, and mostly to see whether its behaviour matches the mechanical findings. An opener straining against a door with seized rollers is not a faulty opener.
The quote comes last, after the cause is known. A number offered before the diagnosis is a guess, and guesses tend to grow once the work starts.
A visit that skips the balance test and goes straight to recommending a new opener has not diagnosed anything. That is the single clearest sign to get a second opinion.
