Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the opening and counterbalance the weight of the door. The opener guides a balanced door; it does not lift a heavy one.

Springs fail on cycles rather than age. A standard spring is rated around ten thousand cycles, which sounds enormous until you count a door opening six or eight times a day.
They are replaced in pairs, always. Both springs have done identical work for identical time, so the survivor is at the same point in its life. Replacing one means paying the labour twice within a year.
Cycle rating is the decision worth making at replacement time. A high cycle spring roughly doubles the service life for a modest premium, and on a busy door it pays for itself comfortably.
Sizing is not optional. Wire gauge, inside diameter and length together determine the lift. A spring that is close but not correct will either fail to balance the door or wear out early.
This is the part of a garage door that injures people. The springs are wound under very high tension and adjusted with winding bars. Inspecting them is reasonable. Adjusting or replacing them is not homeowner work, and the bottom brackets that hold the cables are under the same tension.
