Opener Force Settings

The force setting decides how much resistance the opener treats as an obstruction before it stops and reverses.

It is a safety system. Raising it to make a stubborn door close is the single most dangerous adjustment on a garage door, because it removes the thing that stops the door closing on whatever is underneath.

The correct response to a door that trips the force limit is to find the resistance. Worn rollers, a dry hinge, a track out of alignment or a spring losing tension all raise the effort required, and all of them are the actual fault.

Force is set after the door is balanced and the travel limits are correct, never before. Setting it against an unbalanced door calibrates the opener to a problem.

The test is simple and should be done after any adjustment: place a solid object on the floor in the door's path and close it. The door must contact the object and reverse promptly. If it does not, the force is too high regardless of what the dial says.
