Limit Switch and Travel Adjustment

Travel limits tell the opener where the door's fully open and fully closed positions are. They are not a preference, they are a measurement.

A down limit set too low means the door reaches the floor and the opener keeps driving. The resistance is read as an obstruction and the door reverses, which looks exactly like a sensor fault to anyone not watching closely.

A down limit set too high leaves a gap at the bottom, which lets in weather, sand and animals, and puts the weight on the opener rather than on the floor.

An up limit set too far can drive the door into the header or pull the rollers past the end of the track, which is a much more expensive mistake than the down limit.

Limits are adjusted in small increments with the door cycled fully between each change. On most units they interact with the force settings, so a limit change usually means rechecking the force too.
