Most openers pair a remote through a learn button on the motor head. Press it, then press the remote button within the timeout, and the unit stores the code.

The step people skip is clearing the memory. Holding the learn button until the indicator goes out erases every stored remote and keypad. That matters when you move into a house, because previous owners, contractors and anyone who was ever given a spare may still have a working remote.

Keypads follow the same logic with a PIN. Choose something that is not the house number, which is the first thing anyone would try.

Rolling code openers change the code after every use, so a captured signal cannot be replayed. Very old fixed code units do not, and on those the remote itself is a genuine security weakness rather than a convenience.

A remote that works intermittently at range is usually a battery on the way out rather than a fault at the opener, and that is worth ruling out before anything is reprogrammed.
